NDIS community access in Townsville, starting from home

Where you live decides how easy it is to get out. Each of our Townsville SIL homes is near shops, buses and places to spend the day.

Community access is easier when home is in the right spot

NDIS community access pays for a support worker to help you get out and do things you choose, like sport, shopping, church, volunteering or catching up with friends. In a plan it is usually listed as assistance with social, economic and community participation.

For people in our SIL homes, community access normally sits alongside the SIL funding. Location makes a real difference to how far that funding goes. A home near a bus interchange or shopping centre means less time in the car and more time doing the thing you went out for. So each listing below shows what is close by.

Places to go around Townsville

Townsville has plenty to do without a long trip. The Strand is flat and has shade, which suits wheelchairs and walkers, and early mornings there are cooler. Riverway in Thuringowa has lagoon pools and parkland. Castle Hill is a challenge for some and a good drive to the lookout for others. For a bigger day out, the ferry to Magnetic Island leaves from the Breakwater terminal.

Closer to home it might be the library, a men's shed, a church group, footy at the stadium or a regular coffee at Willows or Stockland. The best community access plan is built on things you already like doing, plus one or two new things you want to try.

Getting around: buses, taxis and support worker cars

Sunbus runs public buses across Townsville, and several of our homes are close to a stop. If you have trouble using buses, the Queensland Taxi Subsidy Scheme can cut the cost of taxi trips. A Companion Card lets the person supporting you get into many venues and events free.

Support workers can also drive you in their own car or the house vehicle. Under the NDIS pricing rules, providers can claim the kilometres from your funding, so ask how this is charged before you plan regular trips.

Planning around the weather

Summer afternoons in Townsville are hot and the wet season brings storms. Outdoor plans work best early in the day. On wet days there are indoor options such as shopping centres, cinemas, libraries and the Museum of Tropical Queensland in the city.

One-to-one or with a group

Some people like going out one-to-one with a worker. Others enjoy going with housemates, which can also stretch funding further because the support is shared. If you'd like regular group outings, have a look at our group and centre activities. For more on what community participation support covers, see community participation in Townsville.

Frequently asked questions
